A recent study identifies the cities with the worst hotel offerings in the United States, and the findings should make you think double check hotel reviews before purchasing that discounted package to popular destinations such as Myrtle Beach, Atlantic City, or San Jose. According to a PlanetWare article, data collected from TripAdvisor reveals nearly 8 million hotel reviews from more than 9,000 hotels across 95 U.S. cities.

The study focused on one and two-star reviews, which are categorized as bad reviews. Cities with the highest percentage of these reviews were considered the worst. In the shocking findings, Myrtle Beach emerged as the city with the worst hotel experience in the United States, with one in five visitors leaving bad reviews. The top three issues plaguing these hotels included the smell of smoke in rooms, a lack of toilet paper, and bed bugs.

Frequent travelers to Myrtle Beach will likely be disappointed with these findings, given it's a popular East Coast destination with over 60 miles of sandy shores. Due to its affordable accommodations, it often ranks as one of the best beach towns for budget-conscious travelers. However, with a staggering number of mentions of bed bugs in local hotels, calculated at over 130,000, visitors might want to reconsider their future vacation plans to the city.

San Jose came in fourth place on the list, which will likely raise eyebrows for anyone planning a trip to California's Silicon Valley area. Although the city's booming tech industry may be enticing for business travelers, it might come at the cost of settling for subpar accommodations. The study's findings should serve as a wakeup call for San Jose's hospitality industry, as better accommodations are crucial for improving the overall tourist experience in the city.

While not making the top worst hotels list, some cities, such as Miami Beach, FL, and Montauk, NY, fared terribly when it came to hotel service, as divulged by PlanetWare. Miami Beach topped the list with nearly one in five reviews (19.1%) containing a negative mention regarding hotel service. Montauk (17.8%) and Cape May, NJ (17.3%) followed closely behind, accounting for nearly 4,000 combined reviews citing poor service and impolite staff.
