San Jose Kickstarts Tamien Station Project, 555-Unit Affordable Housing and Eco-Friendly Transit Hub in Santa Clara CountySource: County of Santa Clara

The first phase of the Tamien Station project, a transit-oriented affordable housing scheme in San Jose, Santa Clara County, has begun. This ambitious project aims to tackle housing affordability issues while also promoting public transport usage. As previously mentioned by the County of Santa Clara yesterday, the development will consist of 555 housing units, with 135 earmarked as affordable housing. This development will also provide residents with easy access to Caltrain and VTA light rail services.

The project secured $25 million in funding from the Measure A Affordable Housing Bond, a $950 million initiative approved by county voters in 2016. This demonstrates Santa Clara County's commitment to building, affordable housing options and encouraging the use of greener transportation methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Consuelo Hernandez, the County's Office of Supportive Housing director, stressed the significance of transit-oriented development and using public land strategically for housing. The County is fulfilling its commitment with the Measure A Affordable Housing Bond. The aim is to facilitate the construction of 4,800 units by 2026.

Working collaboratively, The Core Companies, Republic Urban Properties, and VTA are developing Tamien Station. Initially, to handle the $128 million affordable housing component of the project, expected to finish by 2025.

Addressing housing affordability is vital for the region, as it affects homelessness and the financial security of working families. Affordable apartments at Tamien Station will be set aside for those earning between 30% and 60% of the county's median income, $181,300. Of the 135 affordable units, nearly half are specifically for rapid rehousing purposes, targeting individuals experiencing homelessness.

Beyond addressing housing affordability, the Tamien Station project incorporates sustainability. The U.S. Green Business Council is expected to award the project with LEED Gold certification, showcasing a commitment to minimizing the project's environmental impact and aligning with broader strategies for reducing greenhouse emissions.

Understanding many Santa Clara County families face affordable childcare challenges, the developers have earmarked 3,000 square feet for a daycare center at Tamien Station. To improve and expand childcare and early education services, the County has also initiated several programs in collaboration with community organizations.
