On the night of December 15, the San José Police Department is gearing up to screen drivers for signs of drinking or drug-related impairment, but they're keeping the location a secret until you reach it. The operation, funded by state and federal dollars, is set to run from 8 pm to 2 am at a location known for past impaired-driving incidents, per the San José Police Department.

The aim is to tackle the problem of impaired driving, which goes beyond just a bar tab for those caught. Lieutenant Nqui Scherry of the San José Police Department emphasized the risk impaired drivers pose to others on the road. The operation isn't only looking for the effects of alcohol, they're also on the lookout for drivers under the influence of legal substances like marijuana or prescription drugs.

For those caught and charged with a DUI, it could mean shelling out an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, not to mention the hassle of dealing with a suspended license.

These checkpoints, funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, are strategically placed to pull over and hopefully discourage potential impaired drivers, making the streets safer for everyone.
