Burbank Man Sentenced to One Year for Possession of Counterfeit Postal Key, Endangering Mail SecuritySource: X/16th & 17th District Chicago

A man from Burbank has been handed a one-year prison sentence for the possession of a counterfeit postal key in an attempt to steal U.S. Mail. Dennis Maddox, 44, was nabbed on April 26, 2023, following a sting operation uncovering his criminal activities. In addition to his prison time, Maddox is slated for three years of supervised release, as per the rulings of the federal court.

The deceitful endeavor put a spotlight on the persistent risks facing our mail system. Caught red-handed with the fake key, Maddox was found guilty of possessing the counterfeit key, designed to grant illicit access to mailboxes across a particular ZIP code. As communicated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Maddox faced the law, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, on February 6, where he received his punishment.

The importance of postal integrity was highlighted by John Jackman, acting inspector in charge of the US Postal Inspection Service’s Chicago Division. "Maintaining the integrity of our postal system is the principal mission of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and, therefore, the general public, which it safeguards from illicit activity involving U.S. mail," Jackman stated. The agency worked closely with the United States Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Illinois, to ensure the offender was brought to justice.

Elise Foster, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers branch in Chicago, reported an alarming number of carriers experiencing threats to their master keys incredibly early in their tenure. "Unfortunately, some of the carriers experienced this on Day 3 and Day 4 on the job,” she said, pinpointing the vulnerabilities they and their keys face in their line of work.
