Massachusetts Big Y Supermarkets Hit by Credit Card Skimmers, Shoppers' Data at RiskSource: Unsplash/ rupixen.com

A string of Big Y supermarkets in Massachusetts have been hit by credit card skimmers, the company has confirmed. The supermarket chain discovered the skimming devices at several locations, potentially compromising customer credit card information. According to CBS Boston, the devices were found at terminals in stores across Springfield, Chicopee, Northampton, Ware, Southbridge, Worcester, Milford, Wilbraham, and Ludlow. These intrusive gadgets were inserted stealthily between December 19 and 21 last year, leaving the company and its patrons on high alert.

The electronic pickpockets didn't stop there; another skimming device reared its head in Westfield, placed sneakingly onto a terminal at the East Silver Street location and remaining undetected until January 12. Skimmers work by clandestinely capturing card data as unsuspecting customers swipe or insert their cards, paving the path for thieves to make fraudulent purchases. As reported by NBC Boston, in response to the illegal snooping, Big Y has diligently inspected all of their terminals and is collaborating with the police on this vexing matter.

Big Y is taking the situation seriously, with officials stating, "We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident, and we notified and are working with law enforcement. We have inspected all of our terminals, and continue to do so. If we learn that any particular customer’s information was compromised, we will promptly notify them and provide them with additional information so that they can take steps to protect themselves," duly noted in the company's statement. Customers have been urged to scan their bank statements for suspicious activity and immediately report any oddities to their financial institution or card issuer.

For those affected or concerned, customer service representatives are standing by. Big Y encourages customers to reach out if they spot anything out of the ordinary on their statements or have questions regarding the breach. Customers can call 1-800-828-2688 between the convenient hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for assistance or more information.
