Ascension, one of the nation's top healthcare providers, has been grappling with a severe cybersecurity breach since Wednesday, leaving its systems paralyzed and causing delays in treatment across multiple states, including Nashville and Chicago. According to FOX 17, the attack has impacted various systems, such as electronic health records and phone services, leading to the temporary suspension of some non-emergent medical procedures.
In the face of the digital siege, patients expressed their distress, Zackery Lopez, a cancer survivor, shared with FOX 2 Detroit how he had to self-discharge from Ascension Providence Hospital and seek care elsewhere after an agonizing wait caused by the cyber attack, he said "I was getting to the point where I was crying because I was in so much pain," recounting his ordeal that he had to find a different hospital for help as Ascension's systems went dark and after his discharge he added, "They were getting charts, they were getting different types of colored paper, writing," reflecting on the chaos of a hospital thrust decades back in time.
The reach of Ascension's disruption spans 140 hospitals and 40 senior living facilities nationwide, a stark reminder of the increasing vulnerability of healthcare institutions to cyber threats. In a statement obtained by WGN News, Ascension admitted the ongoing issues with their systems, stating, "We are working around the clock with internal and external advisors to investigate, contain, and restore our systems following a thorough validation and screening process," yet gave no timeline for when services might return to normal.
The cyberattack has forced several hospitals to divert emergency services, ensuring immediate triage for those in critical condition, some hospitals have shifted to manual record-keeping and procedures to maintain patient care, a massive scale of disruption that echoes historical bouts of ransomware targeting the healthcare sector. Cyrus Walker, a cybersecurity expert, told WGN News that such incidents are becoming more frequent and healthcare systems are attractive targets due to the necessity of their services and the value of their data, he noted, "It's not, 'If it’s going to happen, it’s when it happens, what is your capability to respond to it?'" delineating the grim outlook for cybersecurity in healthcare.
The full extent of the impact on patient care and data security remains unclear, as Ascension Health works against the clock to mitigate the damages wrought by this cyber onslaught. Ascension is the largest Catholic hospital chain in the country, and the pressure to resolve this incident is heightened by their commitment to the health and well-being of countless individuals who rely on their services every day. As updates unfold, the healthcare provider has promised to keep patients, staff, and stakeholders informed via updates on their website.
