Minneapolis Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Target Headquarters Arson During 2020 UnrestSource: United States District Court

A Minneapolis man has been hit with a decade behind bars for the 2020 arson attack on Target's corporate offices, federal prosecutors announced.

Leroy Lemonte Perry Williams, 37, will spend the next 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for trying to torch the downtown Minneapolis landmark amidst the chaos of local unrest, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger. The sentence was handed down after Williams was found guilty of one arson count in a fiery escapade that was part of the larger turmoil following a string of riots in the city.

The trouble began on August 26, 2020, after a suspected murderer killed himself, sparking false rumors and a wave of rioting and looting, as per court documents. It was then that Williams, along with cohorts, allegedly broke into the Target Corporation building as dozens assembled outside. The group made repeated attempts to ignite fires inside and on the exterior of the offices.

Judge Paul A. Magnuson handed down the sentence to Williams in U.S. District Court, concluding a case investigated by the ATF, the Minneapolis Fire Department, and police from Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Richfield. This conviction marks a close to the legal proceedings that have spanned years since the incident rocked the city. U.S. Assistant Attorneys Chelsea A. Walker and Nathan H. Nelson took the lead on the prosecution's side.
