A North Carolina man, Anthony Mastanduno, copped to a slew of charges including six felonies for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, according to the Department of Justice. The 61-year-old, who previously hailed from Farmingdale, New York, admitted to multiple violent offenses as part of a plea deal struck in District Court on Tuesday.

Mastanduno's felony convictions include civil disorder, entering and remaining in restricted building or grounds with a deadly weapon, and disorderly conduct in the same setting, among others. He also plead guilty to three misdemeanors related to his conduct during the chaos that enveloped the Capitol when Congress was certifying the 2020 presidential election results.

According to the Department of Justice, Mastanduno stormed the Capitol through the Senate Wing Door and charged to the front of the mob, overpowering police officers in the Capitol Crypt. His rampage continued on the Lower West Terrace, where he assisted a coordinated attack against law enforcement protecting the Tunnel entrance to the Capitol.

Evidence shows Mastanduno escalated the violence by hurling a flagpole-like object and using a stolen police shield and telescoping baton to strike at police officers. His assault ended when he was met with a chemical irritant spray. U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan is scheduled to sentence Mastanduno on June 27, 2024.

Following his actions during the Capitol breach, Mastanduno was tagged as BOLO #397 by the FBI and was subsequently arrested in North Carolina on August 23, 2023. Over 1,358 people have been charged since the insurrection, with more than 486 facing felony charges for assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The large-scale investigation continues as authorities sift through evidence and testimony to hold those responsible to account.
