Early Mosquito Season Predicted for Michigan amid Record Warm Winter in Detroit and Saginaw ValleySource: Wikipedia/Muhammad Mahdi Karim, GFDL 1.2, via Wikimedia Commons

Mosquito mayhem is on the horizon for Michigan as early warm weather and standing water set the stage for an early mosquito season. With temperatures soaring into the 60s and 70s, these biting bugs are primed to pester populations sooner than usual, according to FOX 2. Mark Vanderwerp of Rose Pest Solutions told FOX 2, "There's going to be winners and losers. Some mosquitoes do really well when it warms up early."

Supporting these predictions, meteorologists explain that Detroit has wrapped up its fourth warmest winter on record, increasing the likelihood of mosquitoes laying siege to skin earlier in the year. The Center for Disease Control identifies that peak mosquito season coincides with the warmest temperatures, which typically occur during the Michigan summer. As per reports by Lansing State Journal, Kati Adams from the Harris Nature Center remarked on the boon for mosquitoes, stating, "I have heard there are some popping up here and there. We haven't seen any here yet, but my coworker has seen them out at her home in Lansing."

The early emergence of mosquitoes could pose a health risk as they are known vectors for diseases such as West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and Jamestown Canyon virus. Kristy Engstrom, a biologist and treasurer of the Michigan Mosquito Control Association, noted in a statement obtained by Lansing State Journal, "Jamestown Canyon will be the first we encounter," indicating an early start to what could be a disease-carrying mosquito season.

Meanwhile, Bay County Mosquito Control is holding off on their spraying measures until the right moment. Rebecca Brandt from Bay County Mosquito Control stressed the importance of timing for effective treatment, saying to abc12,  "Once we see some snow melt, some precipitation in April, those mosquito larvae will start to emerge, and that's when our mosquito control operations up here in the Saginaw Valley region will start to do our aerial treatment." Until then, Michiganders may need to armor up with long sleeves and bug spray to fend off the early-bird bloodsuckers.
