In a move to acknowledge the vital operations of local government, Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner raised the flag for bureaucracy, marking the month of April as National County Government Month. At a gathering of the Board of County Commissioners on April 2, a proclamation was made official, with the county joining a nationwide initiative to spotlight the tireless workings of our unseen public heroes.
The proclamation, as reported by Palm Beach County's own newsroom, states that over 3,069 county governments exist to serve an ever-growing American population tallying above 330 million. These local institutions are the very sinew and bone of communities, providing essential services designed to ensure the health, safety, and heart of where people live.
This year's theme, “Forward Together,” recognizes the commitment and drive of county governments to act as intergovernmental partners. The national conversation turns to celebrating these entities' roles in not just service delivery but as the bedrock of governance nearest to the people. The theme was chosen by the National Association of Counties, an advocacy group that represents all county governments in the United States.
Mayor Sachs, in the observance of this year’s theme, took to X to reinforce the message, hinting at the significance of unity in governance, to propel communities into better futures. He underscored the importance of counties working "forward together" as not just a slogan, but a steadfast goal, particularly in times fraught with challenges both old and, new.
