Port St. Lucie Dirt Bike Rider Arrested After Dangerous Chase and Near-Miss with Patrol VehicleSource: Facebook/Port St. Lucie Police Department

A 25-year-old dirt bike rider led Port St. Lucie police on a whirlwind chase this weekend, coming to a head-on near confrontation with a patrol vehicle before being tased and arrested, authorities said. The rider, identified as Reggie Cantarero, is now facing a slew of charges including fleeing and eluding, resisting without violence, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

The pursuit began around 3 p.m. on Saturday when St. Lucie County Sheriff's deputies tried to stop Cantarero, who was seen driving erratically and "doing donuts around one of their marked traffic units," WPTV reported. A Sheriff's Office air unit tracked the suspect as he dodged into oncoming traffic and pulled stunts through traffic-heavy areas, posing a potential risk to the public.

According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, the drama peaked when Cantarero rode eastbound in the westbound lane of Southwest Gatlin Boulevard towards a sergeant's marked SUV – the officer barely avoided a collision by taking swift evasive action. The chase progressed until the suspect tried to refuel his bike behind a Walmart at 3045 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd, as viewed from above by the county's air unit.

Despite several commands issued by a responding motor officer, Cantarero attempted to hop back on his bike but was stopped when the officer deployed four taser probes, CBS12 reported. Following his arrest, Cantarero was transported to the St. Lucie County Jail, where he is currently being held.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department took to Facebook to caution against such behavior, stating, "Our message is clear: these types of willful, wanton, reckless, and unlawful actions will not be tolerated in the City of Port St. Lucie and a zero tolerance approach will be taken with any and all violators."
