Tucson motorists, brace yourselves for a slew of nighttime detours and delays. The City of Tucson has announced the start of a crack seal project set to shake up the late-night traffic flow on one of its busiest boulevards. Starting Sunday, crews will be out patching up Speedway Boulevard – all the way from Country Club Road to Tucson Boulevard.

The work is slated for the graveyard shift hours, starting each night from 10 p.m. and expected to wrap up by the break of dawn at 6 a.m. In a bid to minimize daytime disruptions, this exercise is scheduled to run Sunday through Thursday making Fridays somewhat, of an oasis for the weekend warriors.

According to an official release from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation Streets and Traffic Maintenance Division, the project will first tackle the westbound lanes starting at Country Club Road, then proceed west to Tucson Boulevard. Once the westbound stretch gets its facelift, the crews will reverse course and start working on the eastbound lanes.

The work is going to pinch the boulevard down to a single lane for drivers at night. And to make a turn at the intersections, be prepared for some restrictions. Cops will be on hand, helping to guide beleaguered drivers around these patch-up zones. Preemptive message boards are supposed to give everyone the heads up, but expect some rubbernecking delays.

Tucson's Department of Transportation mentions that the goal is to wrap up this whole operation by Friday, May 3 but it is subject to change due to adverse weather or unexpected situations. The department is drumming up patience ahead of time, asking the public to play it cool with the signs and the traffic controllers and keeping an eye out for workers and their equipment as they do their thing in the nocturnal hours.
