Heat struck hard at a Lynn track and field event, sending 11 young athletes potently pitching into the throes of dehydration and exhaustion, requiring urgent medical attention. As reported by WHDH, the children, ages 10-12, suffered symptoms like dizziness during an annual fifth grade competition held at Manning Field in Lynn, Massachusetts, on Friday. Some participants were taken to Salem and Beverly hospitals as an emergency measure, while others found solace in the care of their parents who took them home.

The day's heat bore down unrelenting and without a whisper of reprieve, Fire officials were called to the scene Friday morning after several students began to exhibit alarming signs of heat-related stress this lead to an abrupt cancelation of the remainder of the event, and the students were transported back to their schools. According to a WCVB interview, Lynn Fire District Chief Joe Zukas stated, "Heat exhaustion, feeling lethargic. We made sure they had water."

Despite the mishap, rescue operations were swift and synced. "Everybody worked well together," Zukas told WHDH, "Lynn Fire, Atlantic Ambulance and all the Lynn school department officials, we all worked together and brought it to an end." The field soon cleared, and the temperatures persisted in their surge, tipping over 80 degrees even as the high school athletes later took to the same field.

The high school coach Keyla Betances, keenly aware of the scorching conditions, took the expanse of measured steps to safeguard her athletes. "Just to make sure we take it easy, nice and slow, quicky warm up, make sure they drink water, make sure they have enough snacks so they’re ready for the day," she expressed, conveying a critical directive shared by local officials urging for utmost hydration as the impending long weekend promised more sun-hugged days.
