Friends of Pima Animal Care Center Launches "Big Fix" Free Spay/Neuter Event for Large Breed Dogs in Pima CountySource: Facebook/Friends of Pima Animal Care Center

In an effort to combat shelter overcrowding, Friends of Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) has teamed up with PACC for a community-wide initiative, offering free spay/neuter services to aid large breed dogs in Pima County from June 4-8. The initiative, known as the "Big Fix," falls under Friends of PACC’s new Spay/Neuter Support project, targeting areas with the highest need, as indicated by PACC's own data.

The "Big Fix" campaign will roll out over several days, with seven clinics stationed across the region. Pet owners have the chance to avail services on a first-come, first-served basis, with registration opening at each clinic from 8 a.m. A total of 40 spots will be available at El Güero Canelo, 2480 N. Oracle Road, on June 5 and 35 at the old Youth on Their Own location, while Santa Cruz Veterinary Clinic will also host on June 8. Registration details filled up quickly for the events hosted by Primavera Foundation and San Miguel High School, indicating the community's heavy interest.

The free surgeries will be carried out by PACC vets in their mobile unit, Karen's Karing Van, and by Asavet Charities. Exclusive to large breed dogs—those weighing over 40 pounds or puppies expected to reach that size—due to their higher likelihood of ending up in shelters, the clinics aim to ease chronic overcrowding issues.

Aside from sterilization procedures, participating pet families will receive complimentary vaccinations, microchips, and cones for their pets. However, the service comes with certain stipulations. Pet owners are limited to two dogs per household, and any dog brought in must be at least two months old and weigh a minimum of two pounds, according to information available in a press release by Pima County. Additionally, the offer extends to all Pima County residents with the exception of those living in Marana and Sahuarita, and is not available to rescue groups.

Fueling its mission to save the lives of pets in need, Friends of PACC, the philanthropic arm of Pima Animal Care Center, continues to garner support from the community. The organization's vision is to ensure every pet under the care of PACC receives the necessary resources for a secure and healthy future. More information about the event and the organization can be found on the Friends of PACC website and their social media profiles.
