San Diegans feeling the chill today can expect a slight reprieve on Sunday, with forecasts predicting a mild warmup following a cooler-than-average Saturday. According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures for the mountains and inland valleys are currently 10 to 18 degrees below the norm. However, those itching to shed layers should see a minor boost in warmth as Sunday rolls around, particularly in areas further from the coast.

While Saturday’s marine clouds dared to extend their reach past coastal zones, blanketing valleys and brushing mountainsides, partial sunshine might break through by the afternoon, says the National Weather Service. "Despite some holes in the cloud deck, it does appear to be around 2000-3000 ft thick in spots, sufficient for at least patchy drizzle this morning," the agency reported, hinting that those nestled against the coastal mountains may need to keep their umbrellas handy. Onshore winds are expected to continue to gust, compelling hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to possibly reconsider their plans.

Conditions along San Diego County’s coastal regions aren't likely to see much sunlight today, with dense clouds set to persist. But Sunday should bring clearer skies inland, with a forecasted general temperature rise of 5-10 degrees—still below average but warmer than residents are presently experiencing. However, the stubborn coastal cloud cover may persist into the following day.

Looking ahead into the week, the National Weather Service expects modestly warmer days, with highs gradually approaching seasonal averages by Monday. "The marine layer will be far more shallow with low clouds and fog limited to the coastal areas and western valleys each night and morning," reported the National Weather Service. They add that there is an increased chance of afternoon clearing, potentially bringing more sun by Monday, Memorial Day. By midweek, while some models predict the persistence of this warming trend, others remain indecisive, leaving San Diegans to wonder if they will need to keep their jackets close at hand for a bit longer.

For those keen on sailing, caution is advised as westerly winds could reach 20 knots in outer coastal waters into the early week. As San Diego navigates from the sweater weather of today to the milder climate promised tomorrow, one common thread remains: the unpredictability of a climate adapting to the larger forces of nature at play.
