The Scottsdale Police Department, in collaboration with multiple Arizona law enforcement agencies, is ramping up efforts to curb impaired driving during the Memorial Day weekend with a DUI Task Force set to operate in the evening hours from May 24 through May 26. The Task Force, backed by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, Arizona Department of Transportation and National Traffic Safety Administration, will conduct saturation patrols in different city areas, according to a statement on the department's website.

In a strategy designed, to remove impaired drivers from the streets before potential harm can befall, themselves or others, the Task Force includes partners from Chandler Police, Department of Public Safety, Gilbert Police, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Mesa Police, Salt River Police, Tempe Police and Queen Creek Police. "The purpose of the DUI Task Force is to contact drivers who have made the disastrous decision to drive impaired and remove them from the roadway before they hurt others or themselves," according to a news release from the Scottsdale Police Department.

The holiday weekend crackdown aims to deter driving under the influence of alcohol or recreational marijuana, emphasizing that DUIs are completely preventable. Safety officials are advocating for advanced planning: choosing a sober designated driver, or opting for a ride-share or taxi service to ensure a safe trip home. "If people plan on consuming alcoholic beverages or using recreational marijuana, we strongly recommend they also plan ahead to have a sober designated driver who can get them home safely," the statement from the Scottsdale Police advises.

Amid the celebratory backdrop of Memorial Day festivities, this enforcement and education effort is a stark reminder that the decisions of those behind the wheel carry weight, the consequences of which can be irreversible. The warning is clear and the authorities are unwavering in their resolve, "Please drive sober or find a safe alternate way home," the Scottsdale Police Department urges the public, offering a sobering counterpoint to holiday revelry.
