Tragedy was narrowly averted in West Phoenix as two young boys, aged six and eight, were rushed to the hospital after being pulled from an apartment complex pool on Saturday. A Phoenix Police Department spokesperson reported to 12 News that the call for help came in around 4:15 p.m. from near 40th Avenue and Camelback Road. When first responders arrived on the scene, they found the boys out of the pool, conscious and coherent, with no CPR administered prior to their arrival.

Phoenix Fire Department confirmed the victims were taken to a nearby hospital as a preventative measure. According to ABC15, this incident marks a concerning uptick in pool-related emergencies involving children in the Valley. Earlier in the week, three other children died after similar incidents, bringing the week’s total to five life-threatening events in the swimming pools.

The investigation is currently ongoing as Phoenix police look into the circumstances surrounding Saturday's incident. In light of these events, the Phoenix Fire Department urges the community to practice heightened vigilance and safety measures around pools.

Drowning remains the foremost cause of death for children aged 1-4, outside of birth defects, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC emphasizes the importance of life-saving skills such as swimming and CPR, installing proper fencing around pools, and a constant, undistracted adult supervision to prevent such tragedies. They advocate for the use of life jackets, not just in natural water bodies, but in pools for weaker or inexperienced swimmers.
