In an incident that unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, a teenager from Boca Raton engaged in a dangerous and reckless flight from law enforcement in the Upper Keys, according to authorities. WPTV reports that 19-year-old Maxwell Daniel Burgan was initially observed by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office speeding in a Chevrolet pickup truck through a construction zone on U.S. Highway 1.

The chase began near mile marker 84 at around 12:21 a.m., with Burgan reportedly refusing to stop and to instead continue accelerating, despite deputies' attempts to intervene. As detailed by the sheriff's office, the pursuit saw Burgan swerving through traffic, occasionally moving into the wrong lanes, and even striking another vehicle without stopping. His flight from the law did not falter even after his tires were spiked near mile marker 89, forcing him to drive on two rims.

The escalation of Burgan's fugitive journey was marked by further reckless driving through additional construction zones. CBS12 confirmed that the truck's remaining tires were ultimately spiked near mile marker 99, which culminated in Burgan crashing into multiple vehicles and trees located within a median.

After bringing the extended chase to an end, Burgan was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier for treatment of arm injuries before being jailed. He now faces a spate of charges including DUI, DUI causing property damage, fleeing-and-eluding, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash, and possession of a fake ID. "Burgan admitted to drinking before the incident," the sheriff's office stated, with no serious injuries reported amongst the other drivers or passengers involved, as per WPTV.
