Concordia University Ann Arbor to End Athletics Program After 2024-25, Despite Enrollment RiseSource: Google Street View

In an unfolding drama of collegiate athletics, Concordia University Ann Arbor is set to bid farewell to its sports programs after the 2024-25 academic year, as confirmed by statements from the university's administration. This move, attributed to ongoing financial strains, comes despite a surge in enrollment and previous assurances of the school's continued operation. CBS Detroit reports that Concordia University cited a thorough analysis of its financial model as the primary reason for the shutdown of athletic offerings.

A mix of hope and realism colored Concordia President Erik Ankerberg's announcement, "Initially, our leadership team hoped to preserve as many athletic programs as possible beyond the 2024-25 academic year. However, upon further analysis of our financial model, it became evident that continuing these programs in Ann Arbor beyond the upcoming year is not feasible," Ankerberg noted, as described in a letter posted on the university’s website and covered by WXYZ. The decision will see the discontinuation of 28 varsity sports which have been a signature part of the Concordia Cardinal experience.

Ankerberg stressed that the decision does not reflect on the efforts of the coaches or athletic staff Officials met with Athletic Director Lonnie Pries to convey the decision, highlighting that "Being a Concordia Cardinal was not just about notching wins in the athletic arena. It was about helping to develop men and women in mind, body, and spirit for service to Christ in the Church and world; It was about building champions of character. While athletics at CUAA are ending, the Cardinal legacy endures,"  a statement echoed by CBS Detroit.

Despite the impending termination of its athletic programs, Concordia University Ann Arbor is committing to a full-fledged athletic year before the curtain falls, with adequate roster sizes enabling next year's sports activities to proceed, this includes the possibility of postseason competitions, a commitment that drew plaudits from students and staff alike. “All these kids have said, ‘Oh, we committed to these people. We’re like ride or die cardinals in this thing. We’re going to see this thing through and make some memories,'" athletic administrator and football coach Chance Childers conveyed in an interview with WXYZ.

Concordia's Athletic Director Lonnie Pries, who has played an influential role in shaping the athletic department, emphasized the legacy of the athletic programs in transforming students, a sentiment reiterated by President Ankerberg highlighting that shaping champions of character is a legacy that will endure even as the sports programs conclude. Detailed information about the academic programs and graduation pathways for current students, post the shutdown of athletics, is expected to be shared after the Academic Council meeting on June 19, with updates to be posted online, as foretold by administrative letters and covered by Victory Sports Network.
