Investigation Underway After Inmate Dies From Suspected Drug Overdose at Bexar County JailSource: Google Street View

An inmate at the Bexar County Jail has died following what officials suspect was a drug overdose, KENS 5 reported. At approximately 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, two men were found unconscious by deputies, prompt life-saving measures were performed, and both received Narcan — a drug used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses.

One of the individuals, identified as Juan Moreno-Hernandez, age 36, was pronounced dead shortly after at the facility, according to the Sheriff’s Office. While the exact nature of the substance ingested remains unknown, the Bexar County Medical Examiner is tasked with determining the cause of death. The second inmate, a 50-year-old man whose name has not been released, was revived with Narcan and is currently at the University Hospital for further treatment.

KSAT reports that the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office is heading the death investigation under the directives of the Sandra Bland Act. In tandem, an administrative investigation is being carried out by the Bexar County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Unit. Official updates on these investigations remain forthcoming as both agencies delve into the circumstances leading to Moreno-Hernandez's death.

The incident calls attention to the ongoing battle against contraband and substance abuse within correctional facilities. It also underscores the necessity for stringent measures to ensure the safety and well-being of inmates under correctional supervision. Officials, from the Bexar County Jail have also reported the incident to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, which oversees and regulates county jails across the state.
