A man was hospitalized on Friday after sustaining a gunshot wound in the parking lot of the Streeterville Whole Foods, according to officials. The Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford reported that the 40-year-old victim was shot in the shoulder near the grocery store located at 255 E. Grand Ave. He was subsequently transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is said to be in good condition, the Sun-Times reports.

Following the incident, there was a significant police and SWAT team response, causing interruptions throughout the downtown area. A Whole Foods Market employee, interviewed by NBC Chicago, described witnessing a disruptive individual who later discharged a gun and retreated into the parking structure. With the streets closed, reflecting off the yellow police tape encircling the scene, educators at a nearby school, also housed within the building, postponed a field trip and instructed students to remain sheltered with the blinds drawn, according to NBC Chicago.

Chicago police confirmed having received a call for service in the vicinity but have yet to release additional particulars on the events that transpired. As per the Chicago Sun-Times, the area surrounding the grocery store, near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Fairbanks Street, has been secured by law enforcement, with several road closures impacting local traffic.
