A Memphis man, identified as Charlie Gibson, has been hit with a hefty prison sentence exceeding 17 years for firearm and drug offenses. United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz disclosed the sentencing details after Gibson was convicted on several charges, including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession in aid of drug trafficking, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. According to the justice department, Gibson’s initial run-in with security guards in a Memphis apartment complex back in December 2021 kicked off the events leading to his sentencing, when he was found with a Glock .40 caliber pistol and sizable quantities of marijuana.
Further complicating his legal woes, in July 2022 Gibson was involved in an escalation where he struck a deputy with his car—this incident in Cordova, Tennessee drew more scrutiny, ultimately uncovering yet another Glock .40 caliber pistol after Gibson, having been shot by the deputy, crashed the vehicle and a combined set of charges from these 202 your warrant overwhelmed the man with the legal pressure that would lead to his conviction. United States District Court Judge Sheryl H. Lipman prescribed the prison term on June 11, mandating 210 months of incarceration followed by three years of supervised release—a system that distinctly operates without parole options.
The case showcased as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, aligns with the program's objectives to curb violent crime and gun violence via collaboration between law enforcement and communities. Unveiling its strategy in 2021, the Department of Justice emphasized fostering community trust, backing organizations working to prevent violence, enacting focused and intentional enforcement, and evaluating the efficacy of these measures. The task force involved the Memphis Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, both instrumental in bringing the Gibson case to a federal level for prosecution.
