The vibrant city of Austin, known for its inclusivity and thriving LGBTQ community, witnesses the dawn of a new era in music appreciation with the opening of Sunshine Vinyl. This fresh establishment is more than just a vinyl shop; it is a sanctuary for the queer community and music aficionates alike, located on East Fifth Street, with its grand inauguration celebrated on a sunny Saturday.

Luca Kisielius, the proprietor and an individual with deep roots in Austin's tech industry, has embarked on a mission to create a locale that eclipses just retail. "I want to build a space where people can come and feel like safe and welcome and included, whether that be because of your sexual identity, your gender, your music taste, like whatever it is, I want to bring people together in one place," Kisielius conveyed to KVUE. With this move, Kisielius has shifted gears from a decade-long tech tenure to pursue a more heartfelt endeavor: to rekindle the connection with physical media and to serve the community.

Curating a collection of records isn't just a business for Kisielius; it represents an expansive outreach, involving local record stores like Alchemy Records, social media platforms such as Facebook Marketplace, and even through the act of receiving donations. Kisielius' vision transcends commerce, heavily focusing on the customer's experience within the store. "If someone comes in my store and they walk out and they've discovered a new album, whether they've bought it or not, and they felt like they had a good time, that's what that's what I care about," Kisielius explained in an interview with KVUE.

Opening its doors during Pride Month, Sunshine Vinyl also aims to host an array of events that resonate with the diverse tastes of its patrons. With planned DJ sets, spoken word performances, local live music, and charity fundraisers, the store has stated a specific dedication to support and raise awareness for HIV, a cause personally meaningful to the community. In an act of remembrance and solidarity, "I’m going to dedicate a whole day to raising money for a local HIV charity," Kisielius told KVUE. This commitment is punctuated by a poignant donation of records from a man honoring his late husband who passed away from HIV/AIDS complications.

Solidifying the notion that Sunshine Vinyl is an all-embracing hub for music lovers, the store kicked off with an opening bash on June 15. The celebration was highlighted by local flavors and sounds, featuring beer from Zilker Brewing, pizza from Slice Society Pizza, and the rhythms of local artist The Foxtones. Further details on the store, including its full address at 1601 E 5th St., Ste. 108, and operating hours from Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., can be found on their website, as referenced by Community Impact.
