Oakland's BART Red Line Service Disrupted by Derailed Maintenance Vehicle, Extended Delays ExpectedSource: Michael Slaten, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Commuters on BART woke up to a slower pace this morning as a derailed maintenance vehicle disrupted service, forcing the Red Line between Millbrae and Richmond to be canceled. The equipment went off track near the 19th St Station in Oakland, setting off a ripple of delays and reroutes across the network.

An alert from BART early this morning advised passengers to expect an average 20-minute holdup in the Berryessa and SFO/Millbrae directions due to the unexpected derailment. Riders traveling from Richmond have been directed to take the Orange Line towards Berryessa and then transfer at MacArthur for Yellow Line services heading into San Francisco. The statement made clear that no injuries were sustained in the mishap, and repair crews are currently on-site working to swiftly re-rail the vehicle.

According to an update on BART's official website, BART stated, "We expect the Red Line to be canceled most of the day and potentially the entire day." Orange Line trains will run on longer schedules throughout the day to mitigate the disruption and may also stop at different platforms than usual at both 12th and 19th Street stations.

Upgrades have been made to diversify Orange Line trains for those coming into Oakland. After reaching the 12th St Station, they must reroute to West Oakland, where they will turn back towards Berryessa. This temporary rerouting is hoped to maintain a steady flow of commuters while the obstruction persists. BART has also shared that they will actively cancel upcoming Red Line trains in real time, with third-party apps being updated accordingly through the shared API.

Despite the delays, no stations have been closed, and all lines other than the Red Line continue to operate. To ensure smooth transfers, timed coordination has been arranged at MacArthur Station for passengers switching from the Orange to the Yellow Line. Millbrae-bound travelers are advised to opt for the Yellow Line until further notice.
