At approximately 11:30 p.m., the deceased, identified as Darien Louis Bragg, alongside his girlfriend, allegedly initiated a physical confrontation with Bragg's ex-girlfriend's 21-year-old male acquaintance the three ended up on the ground where Bragg and his companion were reportedly hitting the man, during which the man, in an act of apparent self-defense, pulled out a handgun and fired. According to details from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office cited by The Oakland Press, the single gunshot struck Bragg in the chest and then his girlfriend in the stomach, leaving her in serious condition.

The shooter, whose name has not been released, was detained without incident; after the altercation, he attempted to finalize his purchase at the store and then awaited the arrival of law enforcement, a detail corroborated by WXYZ, which added that the case is expected to be reviewed by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office with charges pending.
