Tennessee Man, Jalon Devon Smith, Faces Multiple Charges After Officer-Involved Shooting in GreenbrierSource: Google Street View

The pursuit of a man following an officer-involved shooting has come to an end, according to multiple reports. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has been called in to examine the incidents of a Friday evening encounter between a Greenbrier Police Department officer and 22-year-old Jalon Devon Smith, who now faces multiple charges.

During a routine stop on the 100 block of Candy Lane, as reported by WSMV, an officer engaged a Nissan Maxima. The vehicle's driver, later identified as Smith, fled the scene and purportedly attempted to assault the officer with his vehicle. Consequentially, the officer discharged their weapon at the escaping car, though it remains unclear if the driver or vehicle was struck by the gunfire.

Late Saturday afternoon, law enforcement apprehended Smith, according to Robertson County jail records. The charges laid against him include felony evading arrest, reckless driving, felony reckless endangerment, assault against first responder, and driving on a revoked or suspended license—his second offense of this nature. After his capture, Smith was detained without bond.

Details of the incident remain the subject of the ongoing TBI inquiry. The official X post from the TBI confirmed that their agents are continuing their investigation at the behest of 19th Judicial District Attorney General Robert Nash. The TBI had previously solicited the public's aid in locating Smith, describing the blue 2009 Nissan Maxima he was operating at the time of the alleged assault, as was detailed by WKRN.

As of now, it’s not clear what specifically prompted the traffic stop, nor the series of decisions that quickly escalated to the point of gunfire. Law enforcement officials and representatives at the TBI have provided few additional details, citing the ongoing investigation. There has been no statement on the condition of the officer involved, nor on the identity or status of the female passenger who exited the vehicle prior to the escalation of the incident.
