Which districts use the tech

Districts in the region have signed contracts with companies like GoGuardian and Lightspeed Systems. A recent rollout in Fort Bend, approved in July, prompted petitions and protests, according to the Houston Chronicle. At least seven local districts now use one of these platforms to monitor activity on school-issued devices.

How the systems say they work

Vendors describe these products as AI systems that scan searches, documents, images, chat logs, and webpages for words or patterns associated with self-harm or threats, generating alerts for school staff to review. Lightspeed Systems states that it pairs automated scanning with a 24/7 team of trained safety specialists.

False alarms and students pulled from class

Students and civil liberties groups say the systems can produce false alarms. Last fall, a Dripping Springs student reported being pulled from class after the monitoring software flagged a Google Doc she had opened while researching teen anxiety for a debate assignment. The incident is one of several documented cases in which routine research, grammar exercises, or historical searches triggered alerts. Independent analysis and demonstrations by the Electronic Frontier Foundation show that broad keyword rules can capture ordinary classroom work and incorrectly flag it as risky.

Parents want notice, and control

A national survey by the Center for Democracy & Technology found that many parents are unaware their child’s school may use monitoring tools and want input on how those systems are applied. The research indicates that parents are seeking greater transparency, more limited monitoring scopes, and clearer notification when AI is used in instruction or to guide intervention decisions.

Why districts say they need the tools

District leaders cite an urgent need to identify students who may be in crisis, given limited on-campus mental health resources. Research from Rice University’s Baker Institute shows rising signs of distress among Houston students, and CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey data indicate that about one in five Texas high school students seriously considered suicide in 2023. These findings highlight the pressure districts face to adopt tools that help staff detect and respond to students in need.

Experts say invest in people, not just algorithms

Privacy and child advocacy groups argue that districts should focus on hiring counselors, psychologists, and other support staff, using automated monitoring only in limited, transparent ways. The Electronic Frontier Foundation and civic tech researchers at the Center for Democracy & Technology recommend clear parental notification, independent audits of vendor accuracy, more precise alert criteria, and public procurement policies that balance student privacy and equity with safety considerations.
