For those who suffer from celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, going out to dinner can be a fraught experience. It's estimated that nearly 18 million Americans have gluten sensitivities, so finding restaurants with not only healthy choices, but delicious options as well, can be a challenge. Cognizant of some diners' dietary restrictions, many restaurants around the country have incorporated gluten-free menus and dishes that can be customized sans gluten.

To break it down to the best in the nation, Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the top 50 gluten-free friendly eateries around the country, using Yelp data and our own special sauce* to produce a data-driven breakdown of where gluten-free cuisine reigns supreme across the U.S.

Topping the list is Oregon's Ovation Coffee & Tea, located at 941 N.W. Overton St. in the Pearl District. With an impressive five stars out of 601 reviews on Yelp, this cafe features an assortment of options on its gluten-free menu, like a cranberry scone and snickerdoodle cookie, among other sweet goodies, and egg salad, veggie and turkey sausage sandwiches finished with a gluten-free bun.

In second place is Austin's Koriente with a solid 4.5 stars out of a whopping 1,420 reviews. Located downtown at 621 E. Seventh St., this healthy Asian-inspired eatery also boasts its own gluten-free menu with entrees like the Obake bowl with shrimp or tofu topped with avocado, fried egg or oyster mushrooms;  and the Mix Mix Bibimbap, pan-seared ahi tuna and lemon pepper papaya salad. There's a selection of gluten-free appetizers, too, such as a hummus and smoked salmon roll.

The third-place spot goes to Barroco in Lakewood, Ohio, with 4.5 stars out of 552 reviews. Located at 12906 Madison Ave., this Colombian restaurant's menu is listed as "80 percent gluten free." Expect to see a selection of tacos with adobo chicken, carne asada and chorizo; arepas stuffed with braised beef, eggs, pork, veggies and more topped with gluten-free sauces; and an extensive selection of entrees, such as bistec strip steak topped with tomatoes and onions and smoked ham with bacon, chicken and fondue.

When it comes to the popularity of gluten-free eateries across the country, Yelp data show that businesses tagged with the "gluten-free" category are quite prevalent, with urban metros seeing the most notable numbers of gluten-free friendly restaurants.

As for relative popularity across the nation, measured by average ratings for a given category, Yelp data indicate that Minnesota, Oklahoma, Virginia, Massachusetts and New Hampshire may not be home to the biggest gluten-free fans, comparatively speaking.

When it comes to how prevalent gluten-free friendly businesses are, state by state, Oregon shows the strongest ratio of gluten-free outlets compared to all other categories, with Puerto Rico, Colorado, New Hampshire and Maine the runners-up. So, Oregon should be your top stop if you want a diversity of gluten-free options to choose from.

* To determine "best" businesses, Hoodline took into account the business's Yelp rating and the significance of that rating proportional to the number of reviews, as well as regional variations, to ensure that states with a stronger pattern of reviews don't have an unfair advantage over states that tend to review businesses less frequently.
