San Francisco's shelter-in-place hotel program, implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulted in several hotels suing the city for damages. The still-shuttered Hotel Whitcomb was recently awarded a hefty $19.5 million settlement for damages. On the other hand, Hotel Tilden and Hotel Union Square settled for $2.9 million and $5.3 million, respectively. The program was crucial in maintaining a low COVID mortality rate in the city and keeping hospitality workers employed.
