Oakland Police Department to Hold DUI Checkpoint Tonight to Combat Impaired DrivingSource: Oakland Police Department

Tonight in the streets of Oakland, the Oakland Police Department is set to hold a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint to deter impaired drivers and promote public safety.

According to the Oakland Police Department, the checkpoint, scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location tonight, has been established based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. A/ Lt. Greg Bellusa stated, "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk. Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Such measures also don't come without a heavy financial toll. First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. With the increasing availability and use of prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and the legalization of marijuana, the problem of impaired driving expands beyond alcohol, requiring a more comprehensive plan of action.

As reported by the Oakland Police Department, authorities remind the public that driving under the influence doesn't solely address alcohol but rather extends to any substance that may impair one's ability to drive safely, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana.
