A high-speed police chase involving a stolen vehicle ended tragically in Ionia County, Michigan, with a Lansing woman pronounced dead at the scene after the car she was in crashed into a tree. The pursuit, which played out on Sunday across three counties, began following reports of stolen vehicles from a Walmart and a Menards store in Ionia, according to sheriff's deputies.
The ill-fated chase commenced around 4:15 p.m. when authorities were notified of the vehicle thefts. A broadcast to area police departments quickly led to the Clinton County Sheriff's deputies locating the stolen cars and initiating the pursuit. After coursing through Clinton and Eaton counties, one vehicle was halted by the use of spike strips, however, a 2020 Kia Forte carrying the deceased woman surged on, ultimately meeting its end on South Sunfield near East Bippley Road, reports stated by WZZM 13 explained.
The coroner confirmed the woman's death at the scene, while other car occupants were transported to E.W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing with non-life-threatening injuries, as per police reports. Sheriff's deputies, in collaboration with state police, are investigating the chain of events leading up to the crash and the crimes that precipitated the chase, MLive detailed.
Following the crash, several law enforcement agencies including Eaton County sheriff's deputies and officers from Portland, Lake Odessa, and Grand Ledge assisted at the scene. Meanwhile, the names of the suspects involved in the initial vehicle thefts, and the subsequent chase have been withheld as inquiries continue, as noted by News Channel 3.
