Indian Liberty LLC is under the gun for allowing hundreds of barrels of crude oil and saltwater brine to spill from its facility, reaching water bodies that could impact the local ecosystem.
The trouble started on March 15 when authorities reported a leak at Indian Liberty's Boyd Facility, which saw an estimated 250 barrels of oil and 1,000 barrels of saltwater escape into the environment. The Illinois EPA's referral to the Attorney General outlines a clear breach of state environmental protection laws, and, regulations of the Illinois Pollution Control Board as per official statements.
The pollutants took a damaging journey over land and into waterways, initially discovered by the vigilant Conservation Police of the IDNR. Indian Liberty has since halted operations at the Boyd Facility and has contracted a clean-up crew, yet the repercussions of the spill remain a pressing concern.
Environmental contractors are in full swing aiming to contain and manage the spill, deploying booms and vacuum trucks in a triage effort near several points along the affected rivers, in locations such as Kiwanis Park and Billet Lane.
