Pompano Beach Announces Tap Water Chlorination Treatment for Quality Assurance from April 8-29Source: Unsplash/ Andres Siimon

Pompano Beach residents may notice their tap water tastes and smells a bit off next month, but city officials assure them it's all in the name of quality. According to a press release, the City of Pompano Beach Utilities Department will start a free chlorination treatment on April 8, which will run through April 29 as a maintenance measure to ensure the highest quality drinking water.

Dialysis patients, those with compromised immune systems, pet owners with fish tanks, and businesses with aquatic systems should take heed and consult professionals regarding the upcoming changes. The city has notified that the shift from using chloramines to free chlorine for disinfecting the water supply might require adjustments to current water treatment procedures. During the treatment period, the Utilities Department will also be flushing out fire hydrants, which could cause temporary discoloration in the residence’s water supply – run your taps until it clears.

While the change may lead some to wrinkle their noses or question the safety, the water will remain perfectly safe for drinking, cooking and other household uses. It's not uncommon for utilities across America to use free chlorine. In a few weeks, the city will revert back to its usual cocktail of ammonia and chlorine, known as chloramines, to keep water clean.

The city's primary goal with this is to maintain the top-notch water quality Pompano Beach is known for. Though residents in this sunny locale might have to endure a slight inconvenience, this routine chlorine wash is par for the course in utility management. Any concerns or question can be directed to the Utilities Billing Division (Customer Service) at 954-786-4637 for further assistance.
