San Jose Insurance Agent Charged with Fraud for Faking "Good Student" DiscountsSource: Google Street View

A San Jose insurance agent is in hot water for scamming his way to extra commission checks, using phony academic records to snag "Good Student" discounts for his clients, said prosecutors.

Thomas Truong, 61, was nabbed after investigators from the California Department of Insurance found he had submitted doctored diplomas and bogus grade cards from various Bay Area high schools, even though some clients were already eligible for the discounts he was sneakily securing for them and he's slated for arraignment at 1:30 p.m. in the Hall of Justice in San Jose, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office reported.

Misrepresenting his clients as students, Truong had been pocketing thousands from Farmers Insurance, which fired him once his fraudulent activities surfaced, according to official statements.

"The massive losses caused by insurance fraud statewide – large and small – trickle down to us all," District Attorney Jeff Rosen pointed out, and if Truong is found guilty he's looking at a county jail sentence plus the bill for restitution — creating a stark warning to like-minded fraudsters thinking they can play the system and skirt the effects, prosecutors aim to rigorously enforce the law to protect honest businesses and consumers alike, the District Attorney's Office announced.

The con artist's scheme included 10 falsified college diplomas, 14 fraudulent high school report cards, and a handful of counterfeit letters from educational institutions, the probe uncovered, evidence the clients denied ever seeing let alone providing. One family, whose son attended a private school, was shocked to learn of the deceit, especially since their child's enrollment alone would have qualified them for the rate reduction Truong faked documents to obtain.
