The mouse may be pocketing more cheese than it's dishing out to some of its workers, according to a new lawsuit. Four maintenance workers have filed suit against The Walt Disney Co., alleging the company skimmed wages, failed to cover costs for necessary tools, and stiffed them on overtime pay at its Southern California hotels.

The workers claim they had to cough up their cash to buy tools for their jobs, a violation of California law which requires employees to be paid double the minimum wage if they're not supplied with necessary equipment. According to the lawsuit, filed in Orange County Superior Court, the alleged scheme affected not just the plaintiffs but also more than 115 other hotel maintenance staff. "Disney required its workers to pay for their own tools but didn’t pay them the required double minimum wage, as mandated under California law," KTLA reported.

One of the plaintiffs, Charlie Torres, an assistant maintenance engineer who started at a Disney hotel on Feb. 14, 2022, is named in the lawsuit, which was reported by local media on March 8th. "Disney may be the “Happiest Place on Earth” for its visitors, but when it comes to its maintenance workers who are responsible for helping keep it happy, Disney couldn’t be bothered to even pay for basic tools," Ron Zambrano, Torres' attorney, said in a statement obtained by KTLA. Disney has not publicly responded to the accusations as of yet.

This isn't Disney's first dance with wage-related lawsuits, the company faced a similar issue in 2023 over Anaheim's Measure L wage law. The California Supreme Court lobbed a blow to Mickey's house by refusing to hear an appeal, which resulted in theme park employees receiving back pay dating to Jan. 1, 2019, the Los Angeles Times reported. The company, known for its family-friendly image and beloved characters, finds itself now grappling with a less than magical spotlight on its labor practices.
