A woman is behind bars after allegedly hitting a Memphis Police officer with her car during a chaotic scene involving reckless drivers in Raleigh, according to police reports. The incident took place on the night of April 14 when officers were responding to a vehicle disturbance call involving cars driving erratically and performing donuts on James Road and North Highland Road, as stated by Local Memphis. Upon the officer's arrival and activation of lights and sirens, multiple vehicles fled the area.

During the ordeal where an officer was hit, the perpetrator was driving a Mustang and refused to halt for the stop sticks thrown by police to stop vehicles, as indicated by WREG. In trying to retrieve the stop sticks, the officer was struck by the car as the driver swerved towards him. After the hit-and-run, law enforcement located the offending Mustang and stopped the driver, 26-year-old Shatima White, after she ran a stop sign at high speed on North Highland Street near Chelsea Avenue.

White is currently facing multiple charges, including assault on a first responder, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury. The injured officer was taken to Methodist North Hospital in non-critical condition and is now recovering at home. Both these details were provided by authorities and reported by FOX13 Memphis.

This recent incident comes in the wake of MPD's formation of their Vehicle Takeover Task Force, purposed to tackle such reckless driving behaviors. While they are taking steps to curb these dangerous activities, a bill that seeks to elevate the charges from misdemeanor to felony for reckless driving and drag racing is moving through the Tennessee Legislature, a coincidence that underpins the tense atmosphere regarding vehicular misconduct.
