Chicago Police Alert Public of Armed Robbery Spree Targeting Social Media Motorcycle Buyers in Grand CrossingSource: Chicago Police Department

The Chicago Police Department issued a community alert warning of a spree of armed robberies targeting individuals in the Grand Crossing area looking to buy motorcycles advertised on social media. Police said that in multiple incidents, victims were lured to secluded areas, held at gunpoint, and then robbed of their money. Tragically, one of these robberies resulted in a victim being shot.

According to the police alert, the armed robberies took place near the 7100 block of South Champlain Ave. on April 27, the 7200 block of South Langley Ave. on May 15, and the 7100 block of South Langley Ave. on May 23. The incidents happened in the late afternoon to evening hours. Investigators now urge residents and visitors in the area to be cautious when arranging online transactions and to always meet in well-lit, public places.

The alleged assailants are described as three to four African-American males, aged between 18 to 25, and were seen wearing dark clothing. Officers are asking the public to help identify the suspects but have cautioned against confrontations should they be spotted.

The department has also provided safety advice to the public. They recommend always being aware of your surroundings and to report any suspicious activity immediately to authorities. In the event of an attack, people are advised "to remain calm" and "remember any unique physical characteristics" which could aid in identification. They also suggest to never pursue a fleeing assailant, and to dial 9-1-1 immediately, staying on scene when possible.
