Miami Beach Man Charged with Sexual Assault After Allegedly Posing as Uber DriverSource: Miami-Dade Corrections

A Miami Beach man turned himself in this week after being accused of posing as an Uber driver and raping a woman in his SUV in February. Claudel Lesperance, 38, faces charges of sexual battery of a physically helpless victim and kidnapping after detectives utilized DNA evidence linking him to the assault, reported Local10 News.

According to the authorities, the victim, who had been at the Barroom Club on Washington Avenue, became ill after drinking and sought a ride home. Lesperance allegedly took advantage of her inebriated state, canceled her actual Uber ride and convinced her he was the driver assigned to her. Throughout the ordeal, she was in and out of consciousness and later awoke to Lesperance assaulting her. After the attack, Lesperance took money from the victim and forced her out of his vehicle, as per the arrest report obtained by NBC Miami.

Lesperance's DNA was found on a menstrual pad provided by the victim, which was a decisive factor leading to his arrest. The DNA match prompted his surrender on Thursday, Local10 detailed. He turned himself in with an attorney and is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, awaiting a bond hearing.

"There's no indication that he's done anything like this," Lesperance’s attorney commented on his client's history, as per a statement obtained by NBC Miami. Meanwhile, Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy Glazer ordered Lesperance to have no contact with the victim. Lesperance, a Haitian national and father of four, had his prior run-in with the law over a decade ago, according to his attorney.

The public's concern over such crimes was echoed by tourists and locals alike. "I think this was horrible. I feel sorry for her," said Anna Huber, a tourist from Germany, in an interview granted to CBS News Miami. In response to the incident, Uber banned Lesperance from its platform, stressing their commitment to rider safety and encouraging users to verify trip details before entering a vehicle.
