A Northbrook man is facing a spate of charges after being accused of causing a fatal car crash that claimed the life of a 17-year-old Glenview resident and Glenbrook South High School senior, Marko Niketic, on Mother's Day.

According to ABC7 Chicago, Taeyoung Kim, 21, faces two counts of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Causing Death, among other charges. The accident occurred late on Sunday on East Lake Avenue when Kim's Mustang allegedly collided with Niketic's Mercedes at high speed. The collision was so severe that it tore the Mercedes in half, with debris scattered across the neighborhood.

Tragically, Niketic was pronounced dead at the crash site, while two others sustained critical injuries. Kim, who was also injured, was hospitalized, but with non-life-threatening injuries. The shocking event has devastated the local community, coming mere days before Niketic was set to celebrate prom and just weeks before what should have been his graduation ceremony.

"That was my best friend and it’s really hard to process right now," Preston Shute, a close friend of the deceased, told FOX 32 Chicago. Shute went on to describe how he and Niketic had planned to be college roommates in the coming year. A makeshift memorial, dotted with flowers, crosses, and handwritten notes, stands as a somber testament to the mourning and confusion left in the wake of the incident.

Ki's scheduled court appearance is set for May 18, the same day as Glenbrook South High School’s prom, casting a further shadow over what is typically a time of celebration for high school students. As the community of Glenview navigates this turmoil, questions linger, and two families continue to tread water in the unfathomable depths of grief and loss.
