According to a report by TxDOT, the plan zeros in on the needs of communities for pinpointing priority areas and forging connections with places folks most often visit. But not everyone feels at ease hitting the sidewalk or bike lane currently, with nearly three-fourths of survey respondents expressing safety concerns - from dark walkways to high-speed traffic areas.

Improvements are not just a wish but a necessity as TxDOT's outreach revealed common demands including curb maintenance, better-lit paths, and continuous bike lanes. Also on the wish list are safer street crossings, so Texans can cross with confidence, not fear. It's about making travel not just possible but also pleasant, tapping into the added bonus of boosting personal health and local pockets.

Gathering insights from over 4,800 individuals last fall, TxDOT isn't just hearing but listening - the community feedback is now the driving force as the SATP moves forward. By taking cues from best practices and specific case studies, they're cooking up a recipe for improvements that satisfy the palates of safety, comfort, and connectivity. The public will get their say in this, too, with a chance to weigh in on the draft plan expected to drop in fall 2024.

With the booming Texas population projected to swell another 28% by 2050, the SATP is more than just a current fix – it's a forward-thinking approach in sync with the Statewide Multimodal Transit Plan.
