In an attempt to tackle the intensified scorching temperatures sweeping across Arizona, the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) has fully deployed its Extreme Heat Safety and Relief Strategy. This comprehensive plan is in effect in every heat-stricken region in the state, aimed squarely at protecting both staff and inmates from the health risks posed by extreme heat conditions.

Following a rigorous planning process, ADCRR is keeping up the fight against the sweltering heat by supplying free ice, allowing for more relaxed grooming and attire standards, and ensuring the proper function of air conditioning systems. As reported on ADCRR's update, they have fortified cooling areas with not only misting stations but also cooling tents where inmates and staff can find respite from the merciless heat.

In addition, the ADCRR is monitoring the temperatures within cells twice daily, to make certain that cooling resources are directed to where they're needed most. This systematic approach to temperature control involves stringent procedures for accurate checks and recordings. Refreshingly, part of the plan also features upgrades to modern, energy-efficient HVAC systems in several inmate housing units, a change from the less effective evaporative cooling systems of the past.

Critical to the strategy is the deployment of large cooling tents, now operational on the sweltering housing yards of ASPC-Perryville’s Santa Cruz Unit. While the temperature checks go on diligently twice a day, the conversion to air conditioning in these units continues at full steam. These in-between measures have been essential for providing cooling relief, the ADCRR explained. Further efforts include updating housing units with shade structures and extending the availability of cooling areas through a relaxing of unit operations.

The ADCRR has committed to maintaining transparency with regular updates on their Extreme Heat Safety and Relief Strategy over the course of the summer, which can be a period of significant weather-related challenges within correctional facilities. The comprehensive details on these updates and the HVAC conversion status across various prisons are public and accessible through ADCRR's Facilities HVAC Conversion Plan.
