Maricopa County Addresses Rise in Elder Abuse Cases, Authorities and Community Mobilize for Senior ProtectionSource: Unsplash/Danie Franco

As we acknowledge World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the sobering reality of elder abuse in Maricopa County has come to light, with an alarming upward trend that's prompting action from local authorities. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell highlighted the gravity of the issue, stating, "The elder community is often a target because of their vulnerability. Many times, it is family members or people close to the victim who commit elder-related crimes," according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

Mitchell emphasized the critical need to "more actively protect our seniors," as the data updated last month from the Arizona Department of Economic Security showed a spike in elder abuse cases to 17,575 in fiscal year 2023, climbing from 14,795 the previous year. Two high-profile cases are currently shining a spotlight on the issue, as per the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. In one, Ronnie Reid was indicted on charges related to fraudulent withdrawals from his mother's bank account, while in another, investment advisors David Volpe and Joel Sauceda are facing charges for defrauding a senior out of more than $400,000.

To counter this silent epidemic, local agencies like Adult Protective Services (APS) are ready to step in to offer necessary support and avenues for justice. Anyone with concerns can reach out to APS at 1-877-SOS-ADULT. The Area Agency on Aging also offers a 24-hour helpline at 602-264-HELP. These resources are here to ensure that the golden years of our elders are safeguarded with dignity and respect, a commitment reflecting our social tapestry's most deeply woven values of care and protection.
