As the nation observed Juneteenth, the historic Orange Mound community in Memphis bubbled with celebration and community engagement. This year, the TONE Juneteenth Festival attracted hundreds to the neighborhood known for its deep African-American roots. The event, in its third iteration, saw a blend of history and culture with musical performances by artists like Erykah Badu and Memphis' Juicy J, as reported by Action News 5.

The area was alive with activities ranging from live music to the scores of vendors and food trucks serving up more than just a taste of the local cuisine to satisfy attendees of all ages, according to the same Action News 5 report. Adding to the day's safety, Anthony Elmore, the security chief for the festival, expected a crowd of 2,000 and employed measures like metal detectors and physical pat-downs ensuring, "every individual here is being checked properly," in a statement obtained by WREG News.

With festivities encompassing more than just the weekend, prior Juneteenth events in Memphis included face-painting, good food, and giveaways. The Orange Mound Collaborative Group held a particularly community-focused celebration that brought state representative G.A. Hardaway to the locale. He highlighted the event's local roots, telling Local Memphis, "What's particular about this Juneteenth event is that it's put on by the community."
