Phoenix Community Mourns as 2-Year-Old Celeste Molina Becomes Second Drowning Victim of the DaySource: Google Street View

A tragic incident occurred on Saturday in north Phoenix as a 2-year-old girl drowned in a backyard pool; this marked the city's second fatal drowning of the day. 12 News reported that the Phoenix Fire Department identified the young girl as Celeste Molina who was found in a pool near 35th Avenue and Deer Valley Road and had potentially been submerged for up to ten minutes before she was discovered.

Despite efforts to save her life, including the initiation of CPR before the arrival of firefighters, Celest was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead, while the Phoenix Police are conducting an investigation, the incident appears to be an accidental drowning with no suspicious circumstances reported. Earlier that same day, a 1-year-old boy also tragically lost his life in a separate drowning incident involving a hot tub in the vicinity of 59th Avenue and Thomas Road, as per 12 News.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights drowning as the leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 14, with three children succumbing daily to this horrific fate, as detailed by Fox 10 Phoenix. The CDC stresses the importance of vigilant supervision anytime children are around water and advocates for preventive measures which include installing a four-sided isolation fence with self-closing, self-latching gates around pools, and ensuring that life jackets are worn by children in and around open bodies of water.

According to a statement by Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, "A child can drown in as little as two inches of water," he pointed out the importance of constant adult supervision around pools because "that's why it's so imperative to have constant supervision of your child when you're around any kind of water."
