A semi-truck accident occurred early Sunday on Interstate 279 when the driver lost control, resulting in the vehicle's plunge off the Parkway North and onto the road below. TribLIVE reported the crash happened around 3:30 a.m. in Ohio Township, with the tractor-trailer hitting a concrete barrier before rolling over onto Mt. Nebo Road. The driver, who has not been named by authorities, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital with serious injuries that were deemed non-life-threatening, according to police.

The tractor-trailer was traveling southbound when the incident took place just north of the Mt. Nebo Road exit, eyewitnesses described the vehicle hitting the barrier and flipping over, the aftermath left the cab and trailer scattered, which crews including police and fire units from Ohio Township and Franklin Park saw as they responded to assist at the scene, alongside McGann and Chester Towing Company aiding in the cleanup process. WPXI noted that parts of the semi-truck were seen being lifted out of the woods by a crane, while workers cleared a spillage of lettuce cargo from the roadway.

Pennsylvania State Police are carrying out a comprehensive investigation into the specifics of the accident to determine the root cause. The condition of the driver has been monitored following the transfer to the hospital, and no other vehicles were reported to be involved in the rollover.

Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, but so far, police have not indicated any suspicion of foul play or provided details on whether any charges will be filed, the cleanup efforts around the crash site continued well into the morning impacting traffic conditions which were already challenging due to the truck’s cargo being strewn onto Mt. Nebo Road, authorities have advised drivers to seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
