In a gesture blending nostalgia with charitable purpose, Kennywood Amusement Park has launched an auction featuring pieces of a storied attraction. Fans have the opportunity to own part of the Thunderbolt roller coaster's legacy as the park parts with six sections of its vintage mural. The proceeds from this unique sale are set to support 412 Food Rescue, a Pittsburgh nonprofit dedicated to reducing food waste and hunger, according to WPXI.
As the Thunderbolt marks its centennial, Kennywood is commissioning a fresh mural to celebrate the ride's storied history. Partnering with Wicked Pittsburgh, the park aims to infuse new life into the iconic coaster’s visual representation. The auction, which started today and is slated to continue through Sunday, offers enthusiasts a chance to not only preserve a slice of amusement park history but also contribute to a socially conscious cause. According to WPXI, the original mural's six segments are being sold off as Kennywood makes way for the new artwork.
Local artists will descend upon Kennywood from Friday to Sunday to forge the replacement mural during "Celebrate Pittsburgh." This month-long event is a tribute to the Steel City, honoring its cultural and historical significance. In step with this initiative, proceeds from the Thunderbolt mural auction will flow to 412 Food Rescue, an organization that forges connections between food surpluses and communities facing food scarcity, as per WTAE.
