Uber Drivers Targeted in Failed Carjacking and Shooting at Memphis International AirportSource: Memphis Airport Police Department

A pair of Uber drivers fell victim to an attempted carjacking and shooting incident at Memphis International Airport, as reported by Action News 5. The event occurred early on Monday morning in the airport's cell phone lot, where the drivers were approached by a group of four men who initially asked for aid with a flat tire before escalating to violence and robbery.

One of the drivers was shot in the leg during the confrontation and was subsequently transported to Regional One Hospital. According to WREG, despite the suspects' armed aggression, neither vehicle was successfully stolen as they could not manage to get the cars in gear. An investigation has ensued, with the Memphis Airport Police Department (MAPD) releasing surveillance images of the suspects and calling for public assistance.

New security measures at the airport are being considered as a direct response to the carjacking attempt. These improvements include heightened police presence, additional lighting, and the installation of more video cameras. The necessity for this review was made evident in an MAPD report mentioning that at the time of the incident, all the lights were out in the north end of the airport's cell phone lot, creating a vulnerable setting for such crimes to take place.

The two victims were caught off guard by the sudden nature of the assault. After shooting the one driver, the perpetrators fled in a white sedan, as mentioned by a witness to FOX13. The MAPD is urging any individual with information regarding the incident or the suspects, who were later spotted trying to use stolen debit cards at a local store, to come forward by calling 901-922-8298.
