Starting today, Nashville International Airport (BNA) will roll out the Sunflower Program, a new service designed to support travelers with hidden disabilities, such as autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety, and chronic illnesses. WSMV reported that the program aims to make the airport experience more inclusive and less daunting for these individuals by allowing them to wear a sunflower lanyard, which signals to staff that they may require assistance.

The discreet lanyard is available at the Information Center on the Ground Transportation Level, and passengers are not obligated to disclose their condition to receive one, aiding the service's discreet nature that BNA staff will be trained to recognize. They have been trained to offer enhanced services such as providing clear directions, additional time during various airport processes, and access to quieter spaces when needed, offering a quieter space to relax if needed, according to WSMV.

Casey Davis, an autistic advocate in Nashville, expressed support for the program, stating, as per NewsChannel 5, "We are daily navigating a world that wasn't designed for us, so having this lanyard helps to create more inclusivity in spaces like this". Davis also emphasized the importance of training in neurodiversity for airport staff to enhance the travel experience for people with hidden disabilities.

With more than 240 airports and 17 airlines around the world participating in the Sunflower Program, traveling through BNA and onto other destinations may become a universally accommodating experience. Stacey Nickens, the Vice President of Corporate Communications and Marketing conveyed the airport's commitment to this inclusivity, as per The Tennessean, "By offering discreet support to travelers with hidden disabilities, we’re ensuring a smooth and positive experience for everyone who walks through our doors". This initiative reflects the Sunflower Program’s goal, which is to facilitate a less stressful and more inclusive journey for all its passengers.
