Texas Hiker, 69, Dies on Grand Canyon River Trail, National Park Service InvestigatesSource: Google Street View

A 69-year-old man from Texas died while hiking in the Grand Canyon on Saturday, according to officials. Scott Sims, identified as the hiker, was on the River Trail when he became semi-conscious and eventually unresponsive. Efforts to revive him by bystanders and paramedics from Phantom Ranch were made but ultimately proved unsuccessful. As reported by ABC15, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. between the Silver and Black bridges near Phantom Ranch.

The National Park Service, alongside the Coconino County Medical Examiner, is currently to investigate thoroughly into the circumstances surrounding Sims' death. The authorities have previously cautioned hikers against trekking in the arduous inner canyon during peak heat hours, which span from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., especially during the intense summer heat. KAFF News notes that temperatures in this region can soar above 120-degrees, even in the shade.

Sims was attempting an overnight stay at Phantom Ranch via the South Kaibab Trail before the tragedy struck. This incident is not singular, as earlier in June, another hiker succumbed to the harsh conditions of the Bright Angel Trail, as highlighted by park officials in a statement obtained by ABC15

Grand Canyon officials have reiterated their guidance, urging those planning to hike to adjust their schedules to avoid the midday sun and to be aware that rescue efforts may be delayed. Staffing challenges, high call volumes for service, and limited capabilities for helicopter assistance due to weather conditions were stated as possible factors that could hinder prompt rescue operations.
