Michigan Recalls THC Vape Cartridges Due to Unsafe Ingredients, Consumers Advised to Check ProductsSource: Flickr / Ecig Click

Cannabis vape users in Michigan are on alert, as a batch of THC vape cartridges containing potentially harmful ingredients has been recalled. The Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), in coordination with RWB Michigan LLC, has issued a voluntary recall of Platinum Vape brand cartridges containing Medium-Chain Triglyceride Chain (MCT) oil, a substance unsuitable for inhalation. Flavors affected include Garlic Cookie, Blazing Blue Cheese, Banana Candy, and grape valley kush.

According to a statement published on FOX 2 Detroit, the CRA has begun targeted testing for MCT oil in vape products since last fall after recognizing the potential risks associated with inhaling the oil. The agency warns that while MCT oil is safe in food and oral supplements, it can cause lung damage when inhaled as a vapor. In a memo, Brian Hanna, CRA's Executive Director, emphasized the importance of safety guidelines for product development, saying, "The potential for adverse effects with MCT oil underscores the importance of safety guidelines for product development."

RWB Michigan LLC and the CRA are handling the recall by working with sales locations to ensure that the recalled products are removed from shelves and safely disposed of. Consumers who purchased any recalled flavors after March 4, 2024, should check their product's Metric Tag number against the list of affected batches on the CRA's bulletin. The details are also available on the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs website, which advises customers to return or properly dispose of faulty vape products.

For those affected, signage has been placed in dispensaries instructing them to return the defective items to the point of purchase or how to dispose of them. In case of any adverse reactions from use, customers are encouraged to report their experience to the CRA using the Adverse Reaction Form provided or by phone at 517-284-8599. The CRA also mandates that licensees who become aware of any adverse reactions report such incidents within one business day and enter the information into METRC, a regulatory compliance system.
